It had been three years after a coup d'état by the Myanmar military unlawfully took control of the nation on February 1, 2021. People who stood against the military's orders have been subjected to brutal violence for the last three years. The military's measures have resulted in over 4,300 civilian deaths, the bombing of homes and schools, the destruction of villages, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
Still, the fight goes on for the people of Myanmar who defy the military's authority. In their pursuit of democracy and peace, many people, especially young individuals, have put themselves in harm's way. The people of Myanmar are fighting for more than just a restoration of the system that existed before the military rule; they are also fighting to end interethnic hostility and discrimination and realize true democracy based on mutual solidarity.
In a world where violence and war threaten democracy and peace, the resilience of the people of Myanmar who are fighting for a better future despite the overwhelming brutality gives hope that we may rise above this dark moment. Additionally, it serves as a roadmap for the collective actions and reflections necessary for the global establishment of democracy and peace.
South Korean citizens have come to the awareness that the government and corporations of South Korea are financially cooperating with the Myanmar military. The Myanmar military profits from the gas field projects developed by the South Korean company POSCO in Myanmar, and pension funds from South Korean citizens are being invested in these projects. The values of peace and democracy are compromised in favor of immediate national and financial interests. South Korea's National Assembly has refused to enact legislation limiting predatory resource exploitation abroad because it would "infringe on corporate freedom." This logic continues to destroy people's lives and ecosystems in many parts of the world.
The erosion of democracy in all sectors of society in South Korea is not unrelated to the genocide in Myanmar. The political climate in South Korea exemplifies the polar opposite of democracy, as the country's willingness to sacrifice for its national interests is on full display, as is its indifference to injustice and brutality. We are committed to working diligently to transform the social structures and political systems responsible for the perpetuation of injustice, and we will not keep mute on issues of democracy and peace that are interconnected beyond borders.
Because we are connected, we suffer together; nevertheless, because we are connected, we shall fight together stronger.
The International Committee of Green Party Korea stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and pledges to fight relentlessly for the triumph of democracy.
