Impeached!
Let’s March On! Toward Equality, Toward Democracy!
We have waited far too long.
At last, we welcome a new dawn of democracy, which we have opened with our own hands in a nation no longer under Yoon Suk-yeol.
Upon hearing the announcement of martial law on December 3, countless citizens rushed to the National Assembly in Yeouido, placing their bodies between democracy and military force. From Yeouido to Hannam-dong, from Namtaeryeong to Gwanghwamun and Anguk-dong, and across the country, people stood up in defense of democracy. To all who joined that struggle, we extend our profound gratitude and solidarity.
We have also witnessed with undeniable clarity how justice, though beyond question, was repeatedly delayed. We have seen how deeply this society is entangled in vested interests and structural injustice. We will not forget, and we affirm that accountability will be pursued.
Now that the impeachment has been secured, we must move without delay toward the broader social transformation that has long been deferred.
Voices that were ignored by mainstream politics have risen powerfully in the public square. Women, migrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and dismissed and displaced workers have stood against discrimination and hate, calling for a society that is equal, free, dignified, and safe. From these calls have come urgent demands: the enactment of an Anti-Discrimination Law, climate justice, the expansion of labor rights, and the strengthening of civic power. It is time to open the path forward and turn these demands into reality.
Let us carry forward the lessons of our fight against Yoon Suk-yeol as we confidently step into the future.
We paused our work and our daily lives to demand his impeachment. In doing so, we came to see clearly who truly holds the power to move society. When we stopped, the world came to a halt. When we moved, the world moved with us.
Let us remember the courage we found as we crossed Namtaeryeong and Hangangjin. In answering the calls of others, we discovered how to accomplish together what could not be done alone. We learned to resist with resolve and without retreat. We learned how to create new paths through collective action. In the public square, we came to understand what it means to promise equality by listening openly and without condition. In the face of oppression by both the state and capital, we learned how to care for one another and how to stand together in solidarity.
In the world we are building, from the grassroots to the heart of the state, there must be no room left for inequality or injustice.
The impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol is not the end. It is the beginning.
The old political order will attempt to contain the revolutionary energy of the public square through a mere change in administration. However, the voices that rose from the square cannot and must not be reduced to a transfer of power between the two conservative parties. What is needed now is a politics grounded in sincerity and purpose that does not defer the people’s demands for "another time," but works to realize them here and now.
Green Party Korea rises in response to this call. To ensure that bipartisan politics does not ignore or betray the voices of citizens, and to move beyond a simple rotation of power between dominant parties, Green Party Korea will advance with the values and practices of green and progressive politics. Alongside citizens, and in collaboration with the Labor Party, the Justice Party, and fellow members of the progressive bloc, as well as allies in social movements who stood with us in the struggle to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol, we will open the way for a politics that does not turn back.
Let us take the spirit of the square and carry it into every corner of this country. Let us bring spaces of equality and solidarity into neighborhoods and communities across the nation. From the grassroots, let us expand the arena of democratic dialogue and organize citizens who can speak to the urgent need for an ecologically just and equitable society. From this foundation, we will affirm dignity, deepen the reach of equality, and wage a broader and more determined struggle.
Let us once again hold tightly the hands we once held, and move forward together.
Forward, toward equality.
Forward, toward democracy.
