Emergency Statement

Title: President Yoon’s Declaration of Emergency Martial Law is an Unforgivable Assault on South Korean Democracy!

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of emergency martial law marks a shocking and unprecedented attack on the very foundation of South Korean democracy. We categorically condemn this blatant attempt to silence the voices of the people and shackle their hands.

Yoon seeks to justify his authoritarian power grab with baseless, outdated rhetoric about cracking down on so-called “pro-North Korea” and “anti-state” forces. This is nothing short of fear-mongering and an outright betrayal of the democratic principles we hold dear. The South Korean people did not and will never grant Yoon the mandate to weaponize his authority against the nation.

Today’s actions lay bare the undeniable truth: Yoon Suk Yeol is unfit to lead. His tyrannical conduct demands his immediate removal from office. We call on him to rescind martial law and resign from the presidency without delay. A leader who tramples on democracy has no legitimacy to govern even one more day.

This moment is a turning point. We, the people, will seize this opportunity to dismantle our outdated political system—one plagued by disconnection from the will of the people and consumed by self-serving power struggles.

We demand the return of power to its rightful owners: the people. The fight for a truly democratic South Korea begins now.

Title: The People Power Party Must Stop Shielding Yoon and Join the Impeachment Effort!

The People Power Party (PPP) has disgracefully chosen to side with Yoon Suk Yeol, the architect of this insurrection. In a secretive, closed-door emergency meeting last night, PPP lawmakers convened in the National Assembly and cemented their opposition to President Yoon’s impeachment as the party's official position. Despite voices within the party calling for Yoon’s ouster, their decision was guided by political calculations about the potential gains they might reap from an impeachment—not by the will of the people or the principles of democracy.

On December 3rd, the nation bore witness to a horrific uprising. Citizens watched live as the airborne brigade shattered windows and stormed the National Assembly. They saw Yoon abandon his constitutional duty to protect basic rights, choosing instead to vilify his own people as “communist North Korea” and treating them as enemies.

By aligning with Yoon Suk Yeol—a leader who has declared war on the very citizens he was sworn to serve—the PPP has exposed its commitment to outdated, self-serving politics. Instead of standing with the people in defense of democracy, the PPP has prioritized preserving its own vested interests in the face of this treasonous assault on the Constitution.

This betrayal may be emblematic of the failures of our two-party system, but it is no longer tolerable. We will not stand idly by while the old political order calculates self-interest over the survival of our democracy.

PPP lawmakers, hear the people’s demand: cease your complicity and join the impeachment effort now. History will not forgive further betrayal. If you cannot act, then resign your positions and leave the National Assembly alongside Yoon Suk Yeol.

Emergency Statement

Title: Arrest the People Power Party for Their Role in Insurrection!

Today, the People Power Party (PPP) has disgraced itself as a criminal against history. By becoming an accomplice to the crime of insurrection, it has betrayed the nation. It rejected the sovereign will of the people, shielded the insurrectionist leader Yoon Suk Yeol, and fled the National Assembly plenary hall in cowardice.

We will not forget the tarnished names of the lawmakers who failed to vote for Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. We will remember the faces of those who cast aside any semblance of integrity, choosing instead to prolong their political careers at the expense of justice and democracy.

Even now, there remains one path to redemption: return to the National Assembly plenary hall and join the effort to impeach the military mutineer Yoon Suk Yeol. Refusal to act will forever mark you with an indelible stain of complicity in this democratic crisis.

Green Party Korea stands resolute in its mission to wrest power from those who treat it as their personal entitlement. We cannot allow the greed and moral bankruptcy of the establishment parties to continue poisoning our politics.

To the accomplices of insurrection: surrender yourselves to the judgment of the people. Power does not belong to you. It belongs to the people, solely to the people.

Title: History Will Remember Today's Failed Impeachment

The National Assembly has openly defied the sovereign will of the people. The People Power Party has brazenly rebelled against the command of the citizens it claims to serve.

We will never forget this day—a day when it was laid bare for all to see that the true power in this country does not rest with its citizens but remains entrenched in the hands of old, vested political elites. This bitter truth will be seared into our memory as a rallying cry for change.

Neither the People Power Party nor the Democratic Party of Korea offers an alternative. We refuse to endure the endless, exhausting cycle of regime changes that perpetuate the same broken system. We will not bow to this humiliation again.

We will build a country where Yoon Suk Yeol is not president, where the People Power Party no longer wields power, and where the reins of government are firmly in the hands of the citizens. We will establish a true citizen-sovereign democracy.

Green Party Korea is unwavering in its mission to see this vision realized.

Title: Stop Hijacking Power and Face the People's Judgment!

The voices of over one million citizens, united in squares across the nation, have been shamelessly ignored. Today, Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, blatantly betrayed the people by walking out of the National Assembly to block the impeachment of the insurrectionist Yoon Suk Yeol. His actions directly ensured the impeachment bill’s failure. Adding insult to injury, he attempted a sly maneuver to position himself for power by issuing a surprise joint statement with Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, in a clear bid to seize control of the nation.

Do those who defy the people's solemn call to uphold the Constitution—driven solely by their desperate thirst to cling to political survival—possess even a shred of conscience or decency?

No citizen will entrust state power to insurrectionists and their enablers. The political legitimacy of those who defied the will of the people and betrayed democracy has already crumbled. Han Dong-hoon and Han Deok-soo must end their cynical attempts toposition themselves as successors to this failed regime and prepare to face justice alongside Yoon Suk Yeol.

Title: Yoon Regime, Stay Out of the East Sea! Stop Your Reckless Drilling Plans!

Even amidst impeachment proceedings, the Yoon Suk Yeol regime continues its audacious pursuit of drilling in the East Sea. This morning, a drill ship entered the outer harbor of Busan, preparing to investigate potential oil or gas reserves off the coast of Pohang. This marks the first step in the so-called “Great Whale” project.

Without public notice or transparency, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, along with the Korea National Oil Corporation, are quietly advancing the Yoon regime's disastrous plans. This must stop now. The drilling must end, and the East Sea must remain untouched.

It is utterly senseless to waste hundreds of billions in taxpayer funds chasing speculative oil and gas reserves. This destructive endeavor flies in the face of reason at a time when we should be urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat the climate crisis. Developing oil fields in this era is an unforgivable affront to our planet and future generations.

The rebel Yoon administration must take its dirty hands off our seas and abandon this project immediately. Green Party Korea will not stand idly by as the sinners of history commit catastrophic environmental crimes against humanity.

World Human Rights Day Statement

Title: Hold Yoon Suk Yeol Accountable for Violating Civil Rights!

On the night of December 3, the fundamental rights and freedoms of South Korea’s citizens were ruthlessly trampled by martial law forces. Yoon Suk Yeol plunged the nation into fear with his reckless and baseless declaration of emergency martial law—an act that lacked both substantive and procedural justification. It marked a dark moment in our democratic history.

Under this decree, the National Assembly and local councils were to be suspended, political parties and associations silenced, and the freedom to rally or protest completely suppressed. The press and publishing were to fall under the strict control of martial law, with dissenters facing severe consequences.

This martial law obliterated civil liberties and equality guaranteed by our Constitution. Yoon Suk Yeol exploited state power to serve his personal agenda—shielding his spouse from accountability and prolonging his grip on power. These actions undermined the democratic principles on which this nation was built.

Yoon's declaration of martial law represents a direct assault on the constitutional order, tantamount to a military insurrection. For those of us who remember the sacrifices of the 1980 Gwangju Massacre, we recognize this for what it is: a grave violation of human rights and an attack on the sovereignty of the people.

Today, on the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we stand united for the protection of freedom, dignity, and equality. Human rights are inviolable and non-negotiable. They are not something Yoon Suk Yeol, or anyone like him, can dare to violate at gunpoint.

We will dedicate ourselves fully to defending human rights, equality, and democracy in this land. Yoon Suk Yeol, the embodiment of anti-human rights, anti-equality, and anti-democracy, must be driven out without delay. In the name of the people, we will ensure he faces the full weight of justice.

Yoon Suk Yeol must face accountability for his anti-democratic actions and the harm he has inflicted upon the people. Let us ensure that the lives and freedoms of our citizens are never again taken hostage.

Title: Let’s Dream of a Deeper Democracy with Kim Yong-gyun on the 6th Anniversary of the late Kim Yong-gyun

Six years ago today, Kim Yong-gyun was crushed to death by a conveyor belt at a coal-fired power plant in Taean, South Chungcheong Province. His tragic death exposed the systemic injustice of outsourcing deadly risks to non-regular workers, those stripped of job security and basic protections. It ignited outrage across South Korea, forcing society to confront the absurdity of a system where no one is held accountable when workers die on the job.

For over 20 years, activists and families of the victims have fought tirelessly to end “corporate murder” and demand the original contractor’s accountability for industrial accidents. Despite this, lawmakers from both major parties have repeatedly refused to act. They have left essential bills to languish, prioritizing corporate profits over the safety and dignity of workers.

Survivors like Kim Mi-sook, Kim Yong-gyun’s mother, and Lee Yong-kwan, the father of the late Lee Han-bit, have courageously carried forward this fight. Yet, their pleas have been met with silence and apathy from the National Assembly. Instead of heeding the cries for justice, lawmakers watered down a bill meant to prevent workplace deaths and social catastrophes. They excluded workplaces with fewer than five employees, delayed enforcement for larger companies (workplaces with more than 50 employees), and stripped the bill of key provisions, including the presumption of causation, accountability for public officials, client liability, and a minimum sentencing threshold.

Today, power plant workers are grappling with a new crisis. Restructuring and mass layoffs loom as coal-fired power plants, like the Taean Thermal Power Plant, are slated to close by 2025. Yet, the voices of the non-regular workers who are in charge of the plant’s core processes are being stifled, excluded from the political discourse and stripped of any space to advocate for their rights.

In the sixth winter since Kim Yong-gyun was taken from us, we find ourselves in the midst of Yoon Suk Yeol’s insurrection—a reactionary assault on democracy enabled by decades of bipartisan failure. Yoon is not an anomaly; he is the product of a broken two-party system that thrives on confrontation, ignores the struggles of ordinary people, and defends the interests of the powerful. This system has emboldened the People Power Party to justify the destruction of the Constitution and revealed the Democratic Party’s obsession with regaining power at any cost.

What would Kim Yong-gyun say if he could see the society he fought for today? What would he say about a two-party system that selectively ignores and exploits workers, migrants, and minorities fighting for their lives and dignity at work and in life? How can we ensure that the voices of those trampled daily in workplaces are heard in the calls for “Impeach Yoon Suk Yeol” and “Arrest Yoon Suk Yeol” echoing through the squares?

Even if Yoon steps down, the lives of workers toiling under the threat of death or dismissal, migrants whose struggles are erased, and minorities battling daily discrimination and hate will continue unchanged. It is not enough to remove a single figure of oppression; we must dismantle the systems that perpetuate exploitation and inequality.

Green Party Korea stands in solidarity with the non-regular power plant workers, local communities, and marginalized minorities whose struggles are often erased and voices silenced. We are committed to achieving a just transition that protects their lives and ensures their dignity. Together with the countless Kim Yong-gyuns of our society, we dream of and fight for a deeper, more inclusive democracy.

Title: Presidential Secret Service Should Cooperate with the Presidential Office Raid!

A special police task force has begun raiding the presidential office to uncover evidence related to the insurrection, including records of the cabinet meeting held during the declaration of emergency martial law. Despite this, the presidential secret service is actively obstructing the operation, blocking access to critical documents and locations.

We strongly condemn Yoon Suk Yeol for weaponizing the secret service to shield himself from accountability. This blatant interference with a lawful investigation stands in stark contrast to his hollow claim that he would not evade legal responsibility.

The actions of the presidential secret service are not only unlawful but an affront to justice. By blocking this raid, they are complicit in protecting an insurrectionist. Stand down now! Do not align yourselves with those who trample on democracy.

The presidential office must comply with the raid immediately!
